SDG&E created a self-service hub for electric and gas construction information and resources you'll need when:

  • preparing to request new service
  • tracking the progress of projects from initiation through energization
  • adhering to electric & gas standards throughout engineering and construction

New Service projects include renovations or upgrades that significantly change the electrical or gas power needs or new construction that requires electric (overhead or underground) or gas line installations.

Overview

Begin by referencing these process guides for detailed information for what to expect and how to prepare for new and upgraded service requests. They provide a roadmap for energization.

Prepare

Before applying, review our document requirements, reference materials for specific job types, estimate future load, and verify potential qualification for express programs.

Print Gas Load Calculator
Note: Calculator is pre-populated with average loads, adjust quantity and load as needed.

Disclaimer: This online calculator is an informational tool intended to provide customers with basic estimates for potential future projects, and should not be relied upon to determine exact or specific load amounts. SDG&E makes no representations or warranties regarding the accuracy, quality or sufficiency of the calculator, and the results of this calculator do not constitute approved load estimates. We strongly recommend that you seek the advice of a qualified electric or gas professional before making any type of project decision.

SDG&E's Builder Services Portal (BSP) offers online access to apply for and track electric and gas construction projects.

Pre-Construction

To prepare for construction, reference these materials for terms, guides, map requests, trenching resources, and lists of qualified professionals.

This list is provided for convenience only, and the contractors are not endorsed or preferred by SDG&E. This is not a complete list of contractors who are qualified. Any contractor with a valid Veriforce Field Verification Report (FVR) with the appropriate Backfilling qualifications is qualified to perform the backfill. Contractors must provide this verification upon request and keep a copy on the job site at all times.

Contractors on this list (link) are approved by SDG&E as qualified electrical workers (QEW) for the performance of Standby Lineman Services in accordance with California Administrative Code – Title 8 Industrial Relations Safety Orders – sections 2940, 2946, and 2948 and California Government Code section 4216.

The minimum clearances below apply to all persons who are not QEW authorized by SDG&E to work on or near SDG&E owned high voltage conductors.

Overhead Transmission Conflicts (69kv and above): Workers must maintain a radial clearance of at least 20 feet or adhere to the minimum clearance distances specified in CALOSHA Section 5003.1 for workers and equipment. This applies to all individuals who are not QEW approved by SDG&E.

Overhead Distribution Conflicts (600V – 50KV): Workers or objects not supported by boom-type equipment must maintain a radial clearance of at least 10 feet from high voltage conductors. Boom-type lifting or hoisting equipment, including the load, must maintain a horizontal distance of at least 20 feet from high voltage conductors. This applies to all individuals who are not QEW approved by SDG&E.

Underground Electric Transmission, Electric Distribution, and High-Pressure Gas Conflicts: Any excavation or potting within 10 feet of existing direct-buried cables and duct packages require Standby Lineman Services (safety watch, outage coordination, and/or construction means and methods review).  Only QEW approved by SDG&E may perform Standby Lineman Services. Schedule Standby Lineman Services in advance by contacting one of the contractors on this list linked below.

The Designer Qualification Program for Applicant Design and Contract Design (ADCD) pre-qualifies non-SDG&E designers to perform SDG&E gas and/or electric design. The program also provides no-cost access to SDG&E design tools and systems.
