Understanding Your PIPP Bill

As a participant of the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) pilot, you will receive a monthly bill that includes charges related to gas and electric service, generation and delivery from SDG&E, as well as program discounts and taxes and fees.

Below are summarized sections of a consolidated SDG&E bill for a PIPP customer with a total bill cap of $38. Please note that your total bill cap ($38 or $115) will correspond to your household income level, as indicated in the chart below.

  1. SDG&E Account Information is the information you will need to provide if you contact SDG&E regarding your bill or account.
  2. Amount Due is the total amount due for payment; this amount includes current charges, taxes, fees and past due charges.

    • Gas — total gas charge in current billing period; amount is equal to your PIPP bill cap for gas, plus taxes & fees
    • Electric — total electric charge in current billing period; amount is equal to your PIPP bill cap for electric, plus taxes & fees
    • Total Charges this Month — total amount due for gas and electric service, including taxes & fees, in current billing period

4. Detail of Current Charges — Gas Service includes specific details on what SDG&E charges for the cost of the natural gas used, along with the costs of delivering natural gas to customers. This section includes:

  • Gas Service & Gas Energy Charges  — charges based on your gas usage, excluding discounts or taxes & fees
  • Residential CARE Discount  — monthly discount for CARE customers, including PIPP customers
  • % of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) Discount — monthly discount for PIPP customers, calculated by subtracting your discounts and PIPP bill cap for gas from your Gas Service & Energy Charges; PIPP discount amount changes each month based on your gas usage
  • Total Gas Charges  — total gas charge, excluding taxes & fees; amount is equal to your PIPP bill cap for gas
  • Total Taxes & Fees on Gas Charges  — taxes & fees based on your gas usage before any discounts are applied; amount changes each month based your gas usage
  • Total Gas Service  — total amount due for gas service; amount includes your PIPP bill cap for gas, plus taxes & fees

5. Detail of Current Charges — Electric Service includes specific details on what SDG&E charges for the cost of the electricity used, along with the costs of owning, operating and maintaining the transmission and distribution facilities to deliver power to customers. This section includes:

  • Electric Delivery & Generation Charges  — charges based on your electric usage, excluding discounts or taxes & fees
  • Residential CARE Discount  — monthly discount for CARE customers, including PIPP customers
  • % of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) Discount — monthly discount for PIPP customers, calculated by subtracting your discounts and PIPP bill cap for electric from your Electric Delivery & Generation Charges; PIPP discount amount changes each month based on your electric usage
  • Total Electric Charges  — total electric charge, excluding taxes & fees; amount is equal to your PIPP bill cap for electric
  • Total Taxes & Fees on Electric Charges — taxes & fees based on electric usage before any discounts are applied; amount changes each month based your electric usage
  • Total Electric Service  — total amount due for electric service; amount includes your PIPP bill cap for electric, plus taxes & fees

6. Total Current Charges is the total amount due for gas and electric service, including taxes & fees, in the current billing period; amount does not include past due charges.
