Overpressure Shut-off (OPSO) Gas Regulator
Introducing a quicker, smarter solution for residential electric panel upgrades.
Residential customers can now choose a new cost-effective solution to simplify electric panel upgrades.
For homes built before 2017, it is common for a gas meter to be located directly underneath the electric panel. This setup usually needs to be updated to meet current utility standards when upgrading the panel.
To address this challenge, we now offer the installation of an Overpressure Shut-off (OPSO) gas regulator as a modern alternative to traditional venting-style regulators.
This OSPO gas regulator is designed to control gas pressure and automatically shut off flow if limits are exceeded, allowing you to meet safety requirements without needing to move your gas meter or electric panel during an upgrade.

Will an OSPO gas regulator work for my property?
An OPSO may be suitable for residential properties, including single detached or multi-family dwellings, up to a maximum of 400 amps.
To qualify:
- The requested panel size must be compatible with an existing 2-inch or 3-inch conduit, or SIDA service and sufficient to handle the new load.
- If the existing conduit or service cannot support the panel size, trenching will be required—and any property requiring trenching does not qualify for an OPSO.
- No gas service or gas meter work is needed.
Installing an OPSO regulator does not upgrade the gas meter and/or service.
How the installation process works
- Submit your electric panel upgrade request through SDG&E’s Builder Services Portal
- An SDG&E Planner will contact you to assess your setup
- If eligible, you’ll be offered the OPSO regulator installation
- You’ll receive:
- A standard electric service order
- A separate gas invoice for the OPSO regulator
- Pay the invoice securely via the Builder Services Portal (BSP)
- SDG&E will schedule the regulator installation, typically within two to three weeks of payment
- Once the gas invoice is paid, your electric panel upgrade can proceed as planned
Ready to upgrade your panel?
If you are planning to upgrade your electric panel, submit an electric panel request through the Builder Services Portal and your SDG&E Planner will determine if an OSPO regulator is right for your home.
FAQ
Once your invoice is paid through the Builder Services Portal, installation of the OSPO regulator typically occurs within two to three weeks. Our team will coordinate scheduling and keep you informed throughout the process.
An OPSO (Overpressure Shut-off) regulator is designed to automatically shut off gas flow in the event of overpressure. While the technology isn’t new, SDG&E is excited to be able to offer OPSO installation to help make panel upgrades easier, safer, and more cost-effective for customers.
Relocating either service can be costly and time-consuming. The OPSO regulator offers a safe, cost-effective alternative that meets utility standards without major construction.
