Time-of-Use Plus for Business

With a Time-of-Use Plus pricing plan, it matters when your business uses energy — especially when a Reduce Your Use (RYU) Event Day is called. By reducing your energy use on a RYU Day, you help keep the electric grid stable for your community when demand reaches a critical peak. Your business may even save money too.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your business is able to reduce energy during Reduce Your Use events, you may benefit from Time-of-Use Plus. Up to 18 events can be called per calendar year.

We may call a Reduce Your Use Event Day when reductions in electricity use by customers are needed during periods of high electric demand or when electric system reliability is in jeopardy.  The most common triggers are based on system load and temperature.

Other triggers can include electrical emergency alerts issued by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) or an SDG&E system emergency that affects local grid operations.

No. Customers are not required to reduce electric load during a Reduce Your Use Day. However, all electric use during a Reduce Your Use Event from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. will be charged at a rate that is 400% higher than the normal Time-Of-Use rates.

Once a Reduce Your Use event has been triggered by the Utility, there are generally no conditions that would warrant the event to be canceled.

SDG&E reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to cancel a Reduce Your Use event before it is initiated or terminate a Reduce Your Use event prior to its scheduled conclusion. Such action would generally only be taken in, but not necessarily be limited to, the event of a system-wide outage or in the event of rolling blackouts.

  • If a RYU event is canceled before it is initiated:

The event will not be credited towards the maximum number of events that can be called during the year.

  • If a RYU event is terminated prior to its scheduled conclusion:

The event will be credited towards the maximum number of events that can be called during the year.

The source for temperature forecasts is the Weather Channel.

SDG&E’s system load information is available on the OASIS page on the CAISO website where you can view hourly system load and forecasts for each utility’s system within the CAISO control area.
