Rancho Penasquitos to
San Marcos Alignment
(TL 13811) Wood-to-Steel Project

Overview
The Transmission Line (TL) 13811 project will replace 138kV structures and conductors along approximately 10 miles from Rancho Penasquitos north through Del Sur, Rancho Santa Fe, Elfin Forest and ending south of Lake San Marcos. All work will take place within SDG&E right-of-way easements at approximately 75 locations within the High Fire Threat District (HFTD) Zone 2. SDG&E’s Electric System Hardening program is an essential component of our Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP) to help strengthen our electric infrastructure in areas most prone to wildfires. This project will replace all existing transmission and distribution wood poles on the TL 13811 alignment with fire-resistant steel poles.

Project Benefits
- Increased safety of the electric transmission system
- Greater system reliability for customers in the North County area
- Reduction of potential unplanned power outages
About the Project
The scope involves replacing 138kV transmission and distribution structures including all wood facilities in the HFTD Zone 2 to enhance fire resilience and system reliability. The replacement of under-built distribution facilities will also be updated to meet current standards and improve system performance. Additional equipment advances include replacing existing arms, conductors, anchors, switches, fuses and transformers. Approximately 10 miles of new high-temperature, low-sag conductor. Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) with fiber for telecommunication purposes will be added to all the new structures, providing lightning protection and increased system reliability.

What to Expect
Throughout the project, we’ll work as safely and quickly as possible and make every effort to minimize disruptions such as construction traffic, lane/road closures, dust and noise along the impacted streets. Although not anticipated, our work may require us to shut off the power for safety purposes. If so, we will contact you in advance to help make sure you are prepared for a planned outage.
Multiple construction activities may take place simultaneously, which could impact traffic and noise levels. Some locations will require the use of helicopters to transport hardware and equipment to specific work areas. We’ll monitor the work hours, traffic control measures and noise restrictions established by local authorities.
