SDG&E Community Relations is celebrating a busy year of social impact, as highlighted in our newly released 2022 Giving Impact Snapshot. SDG&E does more than donate to local causes. We go above and beyond to be an integral part of the work that will create a stronger, safer and healthier future for our region. Where STEM is planting the seeds of big ideas.

In 2021, SDG&E charitable giving included $1.9 million in K-16 STEM education and leadership development.

Of that $1.9 million, $500K went towards DonorsChoose.org. This charitable contribution supported 484 teachers, served 247 schools and funded 901 projects.

But the focus and dedication to STEM education doesn’t end there. We also have 103 employees that participate in our #BeThatGirl initiative, which is an effort to encourage girls’ interest in STEM careers at an early age. SDG&E employees with careers in engineering, meteorology, finance, biological/environmental/computer science and other STEM fields act a role models to inspire a future generation of female STEM professionals.

Creating opportunities for everyone.

Our company’s long-standing commitment to supplier diversity reflects our customers, employees and the communities we serve and truly enhances our ability to remain competitive while also contributing to our local community.

Overall, SDG&E infused $2.4 billion into the economy last year. Of that amount, $936 million went to small and diverse suppliers, representing 39.1% of the total expenditures – far exceeding the 21.5% goal set by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). And that’s how you make sure that everyone in the community has an equal opportunity.

Here is a breakdown of 2021 spending by diverse business categories:

  • Minority Business Enterprise: $461.2 million or 19.3%
  • Women Business Enterprise: $355.2 million or 14.8%
  • Service-Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise: $110.3 million or 4.6%
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Business Enterprise: $9.3 million or 0.4%
