Local electric vehicle drivers earning a credit for driving clean

More than 21,000 electric vehicle (EV) drivers in San Diego and southern Orange counties are receiving a $850 credit on their San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) bill, as a reward for adopting clean transportation to help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. SDG&E will be applying the credit to customers’ bills over the next few months. The bill credit is funded by the Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program implemented by the  California Air Resources Board (CARB) to fight climate change and encourage EV adoption. The bill credit amount has varied each year depending on the CARB regulations, number of EV drivers and the amount of revenues available to fund it. In 2018, SDG&E distributed $500 each, to about 15,000 EV drivers who signed up for the program.

This is the third year that the EV Climate Credit is available to SDG&E customers. Although this is the last year the credit will be offered, future incentives are in the works for Plug-in vehicles, whether they are fully electric or hybrid, produce low or zero emissions, and therefore help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Enrollment for the 2019 Electric Vehicle Climate Credit is now closed. Thank you to all who participated!

Remember, you can pay less at the plug with an EV Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing plan. Drivers who enroll in the EV-TOU 5 plan can charge their car overnight for as little as 9¢ kW/h from midnight to 6 a.m. There is a basic monthly service fee of $16. Visit sdge.com/EVpricing to learn more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each year, the amount varies based on the number of EVCC participants. In 2017, 7,000 customers received a $200 SDG&E bill credit and 13,500 customers received a $500 bill credit in 2018. 2019 EVCC participants will receive $850. 2019 is the final year this credit is available.

Most customers will have the credit applied to their account by the end of August. There is a large number of customers whose application still needs to be reviewed and approved. If you have applied and met all criteria, but are missing documentation, you will have an opportunity to fix your application and still receive the credit. SDG&E will contact you to let you know what documentation is needed.

If you applied for a credit but have moved out of the SDG&E service territory, you can apply for a check instead of a credit. You will need to fill out an IRS 1099 form before receiving your check. Please email [email protected] for more information.

If you have transferred service within SDG&E’s service territory, your credit will be applied to your account at your new service location.

The bill credit will continue to be applied to your bill until it’s used.

You can inquire of the status of your application by calling our Customer Contact Center at 1-800-411-7343.

If you’ve opted out of receiving promotional materials from SDG&E, you most likely did not receive the many emails we sent about the credit. To change your contact preferences, call our Customer Contact Center at 1-800-411-7343.

This is the last year the credit will be offered. However, we are working with CARB and other partners for future incentives. We will continue to update our web and social media pages as these offerings become available.
