For your safety, head the warning signs of carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas formed when carbon-based fuels, such as kerosene, gasoline, propane, natural gas, oil charcoal or wood, are burned with inadequate amounts of oxygen. Prolonged exposure can lead to death by asphyxiation.  One way to help prevent carbon monoxide from being produced is to keep your natural gas appliances in good working order.  This includes an annual checkup of your gas furnace, available to our natural gas customers.

Warning signs in home gas appliances

When using natural gas appliances such as a furnace, be alert for the following warning signs of carbon monoxide:

  • A yellow, large and unsteady burner flame (except in decorative logs with gas flames).
  • Built up soot in the appliance.
  • An unusual pungent odor that may indicate a different byproduct of incomplete combustion.
  • Triggering of a carbon monoxide detector or alarm. (State law requires carbon monoxide devices in all single-family homes that have an attached garage, a fireplace or a fossil fuel source, such as an appliance that burns natural gas.  This requirement extends to all multi-family units starting in Jan. 1, 2013).
