About the Community Fire Safety Program

Because of the risk of wildfires in the region, we have been working with Cal Fire, other fire-fighting and law enforcement agencies, as well as the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services to help prevent these fires and respond faster when they happen.

Through our program we have taken a number of steps to protect power lines from the risk of fires and be better prepared for fire-related emergencies including:

  • Strengthening overhead power lines by replacing many wood poles with sturdy steel poles.
  • Expanding inspections, both on the ground and in the air, of power lines and poles.
  • During dry and windy weather, disabling automatic switches that would normally restore power after an outage.  Power would be restored after safety inspections of the lines are completed.
  • Enhancing tree trimming and brush maintenance.
  • Staging work crews for quicker response and ensuring our Emergency Operations Center can be activated on short notice.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Safety is our top priority, and being prepared for emergencies is part of what we do each day at SDG&E, not only during the fire season but year-round as well. Our mission in the area of fire safety and emergency preparedness is to be ready when fire potential is high, while still delivering safe and reliable energy.
