A dishwasher’s energy efficiency is rated by its Energy Factor (EF) - a metric that rates energy performance. Rebates for dishwashers are based on their Energy Factor.
According to ENERGY STAR guidelines, replacing a dishwasher manufactured before 1994 with a qualified dishwasher can save you more than $25 a year.
Even if you do not own an ENERGY STAR qualified model, there are steps you can take to conserve extra energy while washing dishes. Follow these tips to make sure you are getting the most out of your energy use.
Always run your dishwasher with a full load
Most of the energy used by a dishwasher goes to heat water. Since you can't decrease the amount of water used per cycle, fill your dishwasher to get the most from the energy used to run it.
Avoid using the heat-dry, rinse-hold and pre-rinse features
Instead use your dishwasher's air-dry option. If your dishwasher does not have an air-dry option, prop the door open after the final rinse to dry the dishes.
