New Affordable Community Receives $350,000 in Energy Efficiency and Solar Incentives from SDG&E

On May 17, SDG&E joined local elected officials and dignitaries at an opening celebration for the new Kalos affordable apartment home community in North Park. A check for approximately $350,000 was presented to Community HousingWorks, developer of the community, representing energy efficiency and solar incentives earned through SDG&E programs.

Community HousingWorks earned the incentives through their participation in the California Advanced Home Program, which was created to help the building industry design and develop more environmentally friendly communities, and New Solar Homes Partnership, which is part of the comprehensive statewide solar program, known as the California Solar Initiative.

“We are pleased that Community HousingWorks is able to benefit from these programs at SDG&E that enable builders to receive incentives for using energy-efficient measures,” said Caroline Winn, SDG&E’s vice president of customer services, who presented the check to the Community HousingWorks team. “These incentives are key to helping keep the cost of housing low while helping the environment, and there is an added bonus of keeping the residents’ bills lower.”

Integrating energy efficiency features

As San Diego’s trusted energy advisor, SDG&E employees worked directly with Community Housing Works’ team to ensure that the Kalos development included the right type of cost-effective energy efficiency options to keep the overall costs low and enable residents to have the option for low utility bills. 

Some of the energy-efficient and renewable features integrated into the Kalos development that qualified for incentives include programmable heating/cooling controls, photovoltaic and solar thermal rooftop panels, cool roofs, high efficiency insulation, LED exterior lighting, and an efficient boiler system.

Supporting Kalos community youth development & learning efforts

SDG&E also recently supported Community HousingWorks’ efforts from a charitable standpoint. Earlier this month, SDG&E’s community relations team provided a $2,500 grant to the Youth Development and Learning Centers at Community HousingWorks facilities, including the one located at the Kalos community.
