The first Zero Net Energy new home construction by a production homebuilder in San Diego County is officially for sale as part of the new KB Home Rancho Santalina development in San Marcos. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) joined KB Home and other partners to introduce the new ZeroHouse 2.0 to the public at an event on April 19.
SDG&E served as the energy advisor, working directly with engineers at KB Home to ensure the ZeroHouse has the most technologically advanced energy efficiency options and energy monitoring equipment available to our customers.
“We are proud to be partners on this project and excited to have this kind of new construction in SDG&E’s service territory,” said Caroline Winn, vice president of customer service for SDG&E. “These homeowners will have the ability to monitor and manage their energy use like never before and have a positive impact on the environment while saving them thousands of dollars on their utility bills.”
Energy savings-worthy donation
At the event, SDG&E presented a check to the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Marcos for $2,500, representing a conservative estimate of the typical energy savings a customer would see for a house that size.
“The KB Home is special and has greater potential for savings,” Winn said. “The bottom line is that the more a customer does to make their home more efficient, the more they will save.”
The KB Home ZeroHouse 2.0 is a net-zero home built to produce as much energy as it uses. It has the highest energy efficiency of any new home construction in San Diego County and features a 5.2 kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system, the largest single component that enables the home to reach net-zero.
Additionally, the home has the latest energy management system so residents can track energy use in daily or real time. The system is also capable of executing demand response operations that allow residents to give SDG&E approval to adjust thermostat settings or shut down the air conditioning unit remotely on days when demand on the electric grid is high.
“Many of these cutting-edge technologies would not be possible without Smart Meters that allow SDG&E to provide customers with greater choice and control over their energy use through these energy management tools enabled by the smart grid,” said Winn.
