San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) senior vice president of power supply, Jim Avery and his wife, Susie Sides (former SDG&E employee), have a strong passion for giving back. Helping others has always been a priority and their true passion is dedicating their time to volunteering with the San Diego Center for Children (The Center).
Taking the lead
This year, Avery and Sides not only volunteered their time, but also chose to take a leading role and Chair The Center’s annual Walk for Kids on November 3. Planning committees, fundraising and events were now a priority in order to make this year’s Walk for Kids a huge success.
“It is so rewarding to see the impact that volunteering your time and money can do for a child at The Center,” Jim Avery, senior vice president of power supply for SDG&E. “Susie’s and my goal is to not only raise much-needed funds but to also educate the community about the types of programs and services that The Center provides for local children.”
The Center turns 125 years old this year and, as the oldest non-profit organization in San Diego, it has grown to provide the much needed academic and mental health services to our most vulnerable children -- those having been confronted with trauma, abuse or mental health challenges.
How SDG&E Employees got involved
Avery and Sides have taken this opportunity as Chairs of the event to involve the 5,000 employees of SDG&E. This month, Avery and Sides developed a SDG&E committee to help raise funds on SDG&E campuses through payroll deductions, opportunity drawings and afternoon coffee and dessert mixers at SDG&E’s and Sempra Energy’s headquarters.
With the help of SDG&E employees and local community members, Avery and Sides have helped to raise over $160,000 San Diego Center for Children!
“It’s truly inspiring to see how dedicated and passionate SDG&E employees are about serving our community,” said Susie Sides. “I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone out there supporting Team SDG&E/Sempra!”
