10 Environmental Facts and Achievements
Environmental stewardship is an essential part of our culture and our day-to-day business. Here’s just a glimpse of some of our environmental activities, facts, and achievements.
- National climate award. In February 2012, we received one of two national Climate Organizational Leadership Awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizing our commitment to sustainability.
- Carbon free electricity. In 2011 42% of our electricity supply was carbon free.
- Renewable leadership. In 2011 more than 20% of the electricity supplied was from renewable sources compared to less than 1% in 2002.
- Energy efficiency. Our more than 30 years of success in providing energy efficiency programs to customers is taking a leap forward with the completion of the Smart Meter network.
- Electronic billing. 37% of customer bills are sent electronically; the best in the industry.
- Alternate fueled vehicles. 86% of our Fleet passenger cars are alternate fuel (CNG, electric, hybrid).
- Exemplary environmental compliance. Over 96% of our agency environmental inspections have “no violations”, compared to about 43% statewide.
- Reducing bottled water. In 2011-2012, our headquarters water filtration system use was equivalent to some 248,000 (20 oz.) bottles of water.
- Land protection. More than 10,000 acres in land for environmental mitigation has been protected as part of the Sunrise Powerlink project; that is about 6 Balboa Parks.
- SDG&E Green Team. A dedicated group of employee volunteers focus on identifying and implementing new opportunities to reduce our environmental impacts on campus and promote sustainability.
