SDG&E recognizes the importance of solar as a natural resource in the San Diego region. Our solar technology developments focus on advanced technologies that show promise of more efficient electricity production as well as reduced set-up costs.
We’ve embarked on several solar demonstration projects to validate and showcase these advanced technologies and accelerate their commercialization and development.
Multiple advanced solar technologies will be installed at several SDG&E facilities as part of our Concentrated Solar Power Demonstration Program.
Water Suspended Concentrated Solar Collector
This water suspended collector uses magnifying plastic lenses to concentrate normal sunlight by over 1000 times.
A 45’ diameter floating disk rotates to track the sun throughout the day producing 20 kW of electricity.
The water cools the photovoltaic cells to improve performance as well as facilitates frictionless tracking. Installation is scheduled for December, 2008.
Dish Solar Concentrator/Stirling Engine Generator
This 15’ diameter dish tracking system concentrates the sun’s rays by more than 500 times, on a Stirling heat engine/generator, to produce 3 kW of electrical power.
The dish rotates on a pedestal to precisely follow the sun keeping the engine at a constant focal point.
Installation is scheduled for February, 2009.
