Adding Solar To Existing Homes

As part of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's Million Solar Roofs Program, California has set a goal of generating 3,000 megawatts of new, solar-produced electricity by 2017.

The California Solar Initiative

The California Solar Initiative program provides financial incentives that help lower the costs of solar energy systems and move the state toward a cleaner energy future:

  • Photovoltaic incentives are available for systems up to one megawatt in size.
  • Higher incentives for solar installations for existing and new low-income and affordable housing.
  • A pay-for-performance incentive structure to reward high-performing solar projects.

The California Solar Initiative is coordinated with the state's energy efficiency programs, smart meter system, and building standards programs that involve the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Energy Commission.

Local, State And Federal Incentives

You may also qualify for local, state and federal incentives available for those interested in adding a solar energy system to their home. Also, the government offers personal tax deductions for interest paid on loans used to purchase solar energy systems.

Adding solar to your home helps the environment by using the sun’s source of renewable energy that’s clean and produces no waste.
