Every day, more homeowners and builders are making the decision to do their part to help the environment and save money by going solar. A benefit for those homes already equipped with solar is Net Energy Metering (NEM).
Net Energy Metering is a program for people who generate their own electricity from an electric generating system using solar, wind, biogas, fuel cell technology, or a hybrid generating system.
During a 12-month period, any excess power your solar energy system produces goes back on the grid through interconnection with the electricity grid and your time-of-use meter.
If you produce more electricity than you use, the extra electricity is stored on the grid and you can use it later on days when your system doesn’t produce enough electricity for your needs.
Although you still pay for transmission and other SDG&E services, your energy bill could be offset by the electricity you produce.
