How a smart meter installation works

SDG&E notifies customers by mail a few weeks before the smart meter installation takes place.  Smart meter installation hours are Monday - Friday from 8 am to 5 pm (unless an appointment for another time is scheduled).

Customers don’t need to be present when the meters are installed. However, multiple visits may be required to upgrade both the natural gas and electric meters. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes to install the meters.

In most cases, there’s no loss of natural gas service. Electric service may be interrupted for 5 to 15 minutes. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this causes our customers.

After installation, we leave a door hanger to let the customer know their new smart meters were installed. Until meter(s) can be read remotely, SDG&E meter readers will continue to read meters on a monthly basis as it’s done now.
