Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) run on both gasoline and electricity, and can be plugged into a standard wall outlet to recharge the battery.

Benefits of PHEVs

When compared with conventional gasoline-fueled vehicles, as well as standard hybrid, PHEVs:

  • Get more miles per gallon.

  • Decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) tailpipe emissions.

  • Reduce fuel costs.

Additionally, PHEVs:

  • Can run in the electric mode far longer than regular hybrids.

  • Are able to recharge battery during off-peak hours, at home from the grid.

  • Require fewer trips to the gas station.

For more information on the benefits of PHEVs, see the Idaho National Laboratory’s Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity - Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
