Learning how your home uses energy is the first step to saving. Start saving today by using our Home Energy Survey to understand your energy use.
Use portable fans to circulate the air. They can keep you cool at a lower cost than using your A/C.
There are two main types of air conditioners (A/Cs): central A/C and room A/C. Central A/Cs are ducted systems that can cool an entire building. They're the most common type of cooling system in the U.S. Room A/Cs are generally smaller, individual units that cool only a single room or a few small connected rooms. Room A/Cs are typically mounted on a wall or in a window, although there are portable units that can be moved all over the house. The average air conditioned home in Southern California uses 6,444 kilowatt-hours of energy and the average homeowner spends around $1,095 per year or more.
Selecting the right size A/C to meet your cooling needs should be your first and most important step. Studies have shown that, on average, about 50% of air conditioners are oversized. If you have a well-insulated and weatherized home with efficient lighting and appliances, you’ll have a reduced cooling load and could also save up to 20% on operating costs with a smaller A/C.
Most major appliances, electronics, and lighting must meet specific energy standards outlined by the U.S. Department of Energy. The appliances are tested, with their energy use and efficiency displayed on the yellow EnergyGuide labels that you see on models in stores. Although there are some differences between specific appliances, generally the label compares the estimated annual operating cost against similar models and states how much energy the appliance is expected to use annually. The EnergyGuide label will also display the ENERGY STAR® logo, if the particular model qualifies.

ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. The program sets minimum efficiency standards for appliances and building products in order to recognize and label the top performing models on the market. The standards are more rigorous than federal standards, and depend on product category.
Try using fans instead of A/C from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Reduce Your Use days and you may earn a bill credit. Sign up for alerts or learn more.
